I have been a practitioner in the field of EFL for over 20 years.  After teaching different age groups, levels, vocations in various countries, I have grown into an interest in the practical classroom application of current educational developments. I am an avid attendee of English teaching conferences, where I make the most of the opportunity to speak to colleagues on shared experiences. My research interests include TBLT, student motivation, assessment of communicative ability and intercultural exchange using technology. Current research projects touch on the application of CEFR at Japanese universities and Zoom-facilitated, collaborative, international media projects as (formative) assessment tools. I am looking forward to working with colleagues on exchange/media projects.

More and more language teachers are incorporating project-based filmmaking activities into the classroom to engage students in meaningful communication and collaboration. These projects often result in impressive work that is rarely seen by anyone outside the classroom. Sharing student work with a wider audience provides an invaluable opportunity for “authentic achievement” (Newmann & Wehlage, 1993), yet there are few opportunities for language learners to share their films with others. This article will examine the implementation of the Reel Voices Language Learning Film Festival during its inaugural year. This international event provides a space for university students creating films in a foreign language to showcase their work, interact with an audience, and receive feedback and recognition for their achievements. We will report and reflect on the festival’s launch-year, share lessons learned, and provide practical suggestions for teachers interested in supporting student filmmaking activities or organizing similar student showcasing events in educational contexts.

This paper is the first of a two part series discussing why change is needed now and how to achieve the best outcomes in a manageable amount of time. It will look at a combination of task-based and project-based instruction as the best path to effective English curriculum reform. The following three elements form the nexus of change: independent learning and life-long learning strategies, motivation and, assessment. The second paper in this series will propose a three-year implementation track for a new task-based curriculum.
