This article examines the institutional formation and transformation of war commemoration in modern Japan, focusing on the relationship between symbolic enshrinement and the treatment of physical remains. While existing scholarship has emphasized memory, narrative, and political controversy—particularly debates surrounding Yasukuni Shrine—it has paid comparatively little attention to the materiality of the war dead and the embodied practices through which relationships with the deceased continue to be maintained. This study addresses this overlooked dimension as a critical aspect of war’s enduring legacy. Drawing on archival sources, it traces a historical trajectory from early shōkon practices to the establishment of Yasukuni Shrine, the development and postwar dissolution of military cemeteries, and the emergence of large-scale remains recovery. It argues that Japan’s commemoration system developed as a dual structure in which the spirits of selected war dead were symbolically integrated into state-centered institutions, while their bodies were subjected to processes of regulation, mobilization, cremation, and fragmentation. Using Vamik Volkan’s concept of “chosen trauma” and Pauline Boss’s notion of “ambiguous loss,” the article demonstrates that this division has produced enduring tensions in mourning and memory, illustrating the institutional persistence of violence.

本稿の目的は、沖縄における遺骨収集の展開とその動態を、社会学における集合的記憶研究の枠組から理解しようとするものである。アジア・太平洋戦争において地上戦が行われた沖縄では、わずか3ヵ月の間に20万を超える死者を出した。これは米軍の艦砲射撃、爆撃、上陸戦、掃討作戦による死者であり、敵味方両陣営の軍人・軍属の他、集団自決や戦闘に巻き込まれた民間人の犠牲者たちである。本稿では、今なお遺骨収集が行われている現代沖縄において、独特の喚起力を持つと思われる遺骨をめぐる様々な行為主体の動きを考察する。そこでは、「遺骨」をめぐる言説が開発や行政を巻き込んで新たに人びとを編成している。遺骨収集に携わる人々は、遺骨によって戦争と戦後の沖縄を語り、そして現在の沖縄を語っているのである。その意味で、沖縄における集合的記憶は常に生成され続けているといえる。現代における、このような「沖縄の戦後」の語りには彼ら特有の専有と抵抗をみることができる。
