The 17th World Sanskrit Conference, Jul, 2018, WSC2018 Organizing CommitteeIn this paper, I examine Madhva’s commentary on the first verse of the Bhāgavata, focusing on his exegesis. In so doing, I shall point out how Madhva emphasizes both Viṣṇu’s absolute independence and the reality of the world, arguably the two most important doctrines of Dvaita Vedānta. With this teaching Madhva vehemently rejects absolute monism and the idea that the world is illusory. Since Madhva’s commentary is terse, I will supplement my analysis with references to other works of his, such as the Viṣṇutattvanirṇaya and the Brahmasūtrabhāṣya, as well as with references to the sub-commentary of Vijayadhvaja (c. 1410-1450), the Bhāgavata’s Dvaita commentator par excellence.
