This is a preliminary content analysis of amae situations generated as part of a larger cross-cultural situation sampling study of emotional experiences (Norasakkunkit, Uchida, Tani-Fukuchi, & Deguchi, 2011). Amae is a type of emotion involving a mutual dependency where the assurance of another's goodwill permits a certain degree of self-indulgence (Doi, 1971). Preliminary analysis of the 24 amae situations generated by Japanese and American college students revealed distinct U.S.-Japan differences in the area of (1) hierarchy, (2) chronicity of experience, and (3) emotional valence.
