This is a preliminary content analysis of amae situations generated as part of a larger cross-cultural situation sampling study of emotional experiences (Norasakkunkit, Uchida, Tani-Fukuchi, & Deguchi, 2011). Amae is a type of emotion involving a mutual dependency where the assurance of another's goodwill permits a certain degree of self-indulgence (Doi, 1971). Preliminary analysis of the 24 amae situations generated by Japanese and American college students revealed distinct U.S.-Japan differences in the area of (1) hierarchy, (2) chronicity of experience, and (3) emotional valence.
31st Annual Thailand TESOL International Conference 2011年1月22日 Thailand TESOL
The Hmong, who were rural subsistence farmers, experienced acculturative stress and disorientation when they began immigrating to the United States during the 1980s and settling in urban centers. As involuntary immigrants, the first-generation Hmong fought hard to maintain their Hmong ethnicity and identity which resulted in cultural collisions with American culture on various levels. The purpose of our project was to increase multicultural awareness and competency among Japanese university students so that they understand the process of acculturation for immigrants and thereby preparing them to deal with the diverse immigrant population in Japan. Using videos and lectures on acculturation and cross-cultural conflict, students were asked to create their own program that would help preliterate immigrants like the Hmong, transition smoothly into Japanese society while respecting the Hmong's cultural identity.
