臨床心理学と宗教学をベースとした臨床死生学，宗教心理学を研究しています．具体的には自他の死を受容する心理に関心があります．また人間がとる合理的ではない行動の中に、心理的に深い意味が込められているとして宗教・宗教性・スピリチュアリティの研究を進めています。中米Guatemalaのマヤ系先住民の宗教と文化，自然災害・人為災害への対応などの調査も行っています。スピリチュアルケア学会認定スピリチュアルケア師，認定臨床宗教師の養成にも関わっています。
東北大学大学院文学研究科助教・准教授を経て現職．
