In previous Hölderlin research, the theme of Hölderlin’s concept of “Bildung” (= education, culture, formation) has been discussed primarily from a philosophical and literary perspective. This book analyzes how Hölderlin’s thinking about “Bildung” arose in the social and ideological circumstances of Germany at the end of the 18th century, from various perspectives such as pedagogy, sociology, history of science, media theory, gender theory and postcolonial theory, and elucidates the multifaceted nature of his concept.
