Research project: Clean energy technology development
The objectives of this research are twofold. The first objective is to show a broad landscape of barriers in technology development. This research project attempts to uncover technology-specific barriers in technology development. The second objective of this research is to highlight and define roles of international institutions in overcoming identified barriers in clean energy technology development.
Research project: Drivers for the introduction of clean energy technologies and products: differences and similarities among key industry sectors in the EU and Japan
Introduction of clean energy technologies and products is becoming a key strategic and managerial issue for companies in various industry sectors. This study attempts to classify different drivers for the introduction of clean energy technologies and products among key industry sectors.
Research project: Survey study on citizens’ views and priorities over SDGs and indicators
This research project conducts a survey study on citizens’ views and priorities over SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and indicators in several countries including Japan, US, Thailand and Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to understand the issues and the area of citizens’ concerns and priorities over SDG indicators and goals.

The Maldives National Journal of Research, 11(Special Issue) 38-55, Apr 5, 2025 Peer-reviewedSocial acceptance particularly public opposition on renewable energy have been key obstacles for renewable energy deployment in many developed nations particularly in Europe. The level of awareness of the situation in the global south, particularly in Small Island Developing States (SIDS), was rather limited. This research utilizes Cultural Theory as a framework, incorporating data obtained from household questionnaire surveys, focus group discussion and individual interviews conducted on Hanimaadhoo island in the Maldives. The objective is to gain a more comprehensive understanding of how individuals’ worldviews influence their opinions and behaviors regarding renewable energy. This study also aims to comprehend the anticipated social, economic, and environmental impacts of renewable energy. The authors highlight key findings from a local perspective that they deem crucial to consider for the future deployment and diffusion of renewable energy in the Maldives

UNU-IAS Policy Brief Series, Aug, 2022 Peer-reviewedThis policy brief explores how developed countries can address the needs of vulnerable groups in their climate mitigation actions, focusing on clean energy policies. To realise the full potential of clean energy, social and economic incentives and support measures must be strengthened and widely implemented. The brief provides the following recommendations to guide policymakers in developed countries to achieve a net zero transition that ensures equal access to clean energy and energy efficiency solutions for all: (i) identify vulnerable energy users through data collection and analysis of socio-economic challenges for net zero emissions; (ii) improve governance mechanisms to harmonise climate change policies with socio-economic policies; (iii) enhance support measures for vulnerable energy users to ensure equal access to clean energy through evidence-based information.

Sustainability, 14(15) 9321-9321, Jul 29, 2022 Peer-reviewedThe impact of socio-cultural outlooks on the acceptance of sustainability measures in a low-income context should be complemented by better understanding of socio-economic drivers to bridge the gaps between policy expectation and acceptance in social housing projects. The study attempts to explore the different aspects of well-being in determining the housing satisfaction of the residents of social housing under the slum rehabilitation schemes in Mumbai. Social housing offers considerably improved social and environmental sustainability components compared to slums; however, social acceptability remains low due to their location disadvantages. Using primary data collection from the sample of 298 households in Mumbai, the paper explores the varying levels of their housing satisfaction. The study found that economic opportunity is low in slum rehabilitation, mostly reflected in the job loss of the second earner, exacerbated by the change of work after shifting to social housing. Among other factors, location, accessibility of the building, household size and opportunity for social engagement play the most critical role in deciding the households’ perceived housing satisfaction with social housing compared to slums.
