In order to cope with the envisaged great traffic growth in the near future, the hierarchical optical path network that introduce waveband path, a group of multiple wavelength paths, are being intensively studied. In this paper, we propose a novel waveband-selective switch which enables us to efficiently realize hierarchical optical path network. The waveband selective switch is a generalization of wavelength selective switch to have switching capability of waveband path. The proposed waveband selective switch utilizes cyclic AWGs as waveband MUX/DEMUX where the DEMUX and MUXs have complementary loss characteristic for approximately uniform loss among waveband paths. We fabricate a prototype device which consists of cyclic AWGs and MZI switches on one chip using Planer Lightwave Circuit technologies. We also demonstrate that the experimental device achieves desired switching capability, low loss and high cascadability in each output port.
