近年、日本で「歴史認識」という言葉を再三再四耳にする。なぜ、現在において歴史認識が盛んに議論され、問題にされているのだろうか。歴史認識とは非常に把握しにくいものだが、近年、戦争の記憶をめぐる議論において重要になってきたといえよう。とりわけ戦争の体験を記念碑・記念館・記念式などというかたちで如何に表象すべきかという議論の関連でよく浮上する概念である。戦争の記憶は日本でもドイツでも現在決定的な転換期に突入しているとされる。ドイツのヤン・アスマン氏が明らかにしたように、歴史のある一章を直接経験し、実際記憶している世代がこの世を去る時期に、共通記憶が文化的共有記憶（cultural memory）に変身する。歴史を実際経験している者の記憶に基づく共通記憶と相違して、文化的共有記憶は記念館、記念碑、記念式などに基づいているものである。そのような記念碑などを作る際、歴史認識をどのように表現するかという議論がもっとも激しくなる。第二次世界大戦の経験者がこの世を去りつつある今日、その共通記憶が文化的共有記憶に変わる時期が到来したと言えよう。その結果、とりわけ敗戦国である日本とドイツでは、この共通記憶が文化的共有記憶に変わるプロセスをめぐる議論が激しいものとなっている。この論文でまず歴史認識という概念とその形成過程を明らかにし、主に現在の日本とドイツの戦争記憶との関連で議論されている歴史認識のあり方について言及してみたいと思う。同盟国として侵略戦争を起こし、同じく敗戦国になり、戦後著しい復帰を成し遂げた日本とドイツとの間には、多くの共通点があるはずだが、近年の日本における議論では、むしろドイツと日本が相違しているところが強調されるのが一般的であろう。しかし、日本とドイツの「歴史認識」は果たして大いに相違しているのか。論文の後半において、様々な世論調査などを紹介することにより、両国の歴史認識の実態とその相違点と共通点を明らかにしていきたい。In recent years, the issue of "historical consciousness" (rekishi ninshiki) is frequently and intensively discussed in Japan both within a domestic context and with regards to Japan's international relations. Why have these discussions reached such intensity? The concept of "historical consciousness" is closely related to the question of how to remember war (s) and how to mourn the war dead. As Jan Assmann has argued, discussions about the memorialization of a certain chapter of the past reach a decisive stage when those directly involved pass away and the "communicative memory," which is based upon direct memories of contemporaries, evolves into a "cultural memory", which is based on representations of the past in the form of memorials, museums and ceremonies. Discussions about the creation of such memorial institutions and the shaping of cultural memory are an expression of the historical consciousness of a society. Since we are living in an era when the contemporaries of World War II with their own memories of this era pass away, it is only natural that we witness increasingly intensive discussions about how to shape the memory of this war. Japan and Germany are now passing through this stage of the formation of cultural memory and therefore experience a high level of intensive debates.This article first addresses the history of the term "historical consciousness" and then discussions about contemporary Japan's and Germany's "historical consciousness". As allied and eventually defeated powers in the war, Japan and Germany seem to share a lot of similarities, but in recent discussions in Japan concerning historical consciousness, differences are usually emphasized more than commonalities. But are the forms of historical consciousness in Japan and Germany really so different? In the second half of the article, the author analyzes opinion polls investigating the historical consciousness in Japanese and German societies and comes to the conclusion that indeed many similarities can be observed. The major difference between Japan and Germany, as this article argues, lies in the way politics and politicans address the respective countries' war pasts.

2000年以降頻発した「歴史教科書問題」と「靖国問題」は次第に落ち着いてきた現状を明らかにし、その原因を考究する論文である。2005年の著書『Politics,Memory and Public Opinion』を刊行した後の展開を追及し、その著書の論点と展望をさらに証明する。

とりわけ小熊英二の研究を探りながら、近代日本における国民国家の成立に伴った様々なグループ構築とその仕組みを究明する論文である。『Japanstudien』16号の集中テーマ「近代日本におけるグループ構築の諸相」の論文として掲載されたものである。
